The Eel is a paean to Hackney, examining its people, projects, trades and various unpopular council decisions. We are introduced to the man who walks Hackney’s dogs for a living, and taken back to the golden era of a former soul nightclub, as well as being treated to a host of interviews with local film-makers and artists. I also picked up a few facts on regular eels, a delicacy I only ever associated with nightmares. Apparently they taste great doused in butter, and even with their heads chopped off they’re still strong enough to bend back your hand. Hackney, you’re made of sterner stuff than I am.
