“There was never a time in my life when I did not feel homesick,” confides Maranda Elizabeth in Issue #16 of Telegram Ma’am. This chapter deals mostly with the writer’s hopes of finally starting to feel at home, delicately balanced with her constant yearning to retreat. She writes with bittersweet candour about the town she grew up in and what it means to her, as well as coping with all of adulthood’s pressures to stop dreaming and settle down. Much of the zine’s design is in keeping with this theme — backgrounds feature snippets from old housekeeping manuals with their domestic totems of cutlery, sideboards and crockery. This evocative account of feeling adrift is part of a long-running series which documents the writer’s thoughts, anxieties and hopes.
